Chanting Buddhist discourses from the ancient Pali Canon has many benefits -- not the least of which is study and the wisdom that arises thereby, memorization, attracting "hearers," both seen and unseen, protection, and preparing the mind/heart for serenity and insight meditation. Chanting is not an easy practice to undertake. But it can be learned then become second-nature. It is at this time that it can be very useful. The mind is no longer questioning and doubting. What is being recited comes easily to mind. The vibration of the words themselves, like the far more ancient practice promoted in the Vedas of chanting mantras, starts to affect the environment. And the mind is stilled, if only for brief snatches, catalyzing meditation.
